Engineer Sustainability Engineer, PyPI at Python Software Foundation

Builds and ships features in PyPI's codebase, focusing on billing integrations, access control, and revenue-generating features while maintaining the platform's open-source mission.

Mid Remote Posted about 14 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

The Python Software Foundation (PSF) is hiring a contract Sustainability Engineer, PyPI reporting to the PSF’s Director of Engineering. The mission of the Python Software Foundation is to promote, protect, and advance the Python programming language, and to support and facilitate the growth of a diverse and international community of Python programmers. In support of our mission, the PSF manages the infrastructure that provides resources and downloads on python.org, documentation on docs.python.org, packages on pypi.org, and more.

Overview

This role will be focused on building features in Warehouse, PyPI’s codebase. The goal is straightforward: make PyPI financially sustainable so it doesn’t depend entirely on donations and sponsorships. We launched PyPI organization accounts in 2025 as our first revenue stream, so there’s already some groundwork laid.

Most of your time goes to shipping features that help sustain PyPI and the PSF. You’ll write Python, work with the packaging ecosystem’s standards process when new features need upstream changes, and deal with the unglamorous parts: billing integrations, access control edge cases, storage and CDN costs.

The tricky part isn’t technical. It’s figuring out what PyPI can offer to free users as well as organizations. You’ll be part of those decisions, which means understanding what commercial tools offer, what enterprises actually need, and how to generate revenue while keeping the PSF’s mission first. PyPI is free infrastructure that millions of people depend on. We have an opportunity to make it more powerful for organizations, which will help sustain the foundation, as well as free users.

Core Responsibilities

  • Build and ship features in Warehouse, PyPI’s codebase
  • Billing integrations, access control, storage and CDN work
  • Write Python, review PRs, ship user-facing changes
  • Coordinate with the Infrastructure Engineer on deployment, scaling, and operational concerns
  • Collaborate with PSF and PyPI security engineers on security-related features and concerns
  • Work closely with the PyPI Support Specialist to address PyPI Organizations, user-reported security concerns and escalate issues appropriately
  • Interface with PyPI stakeholders about user and community needs
  • Occasional on-call responsibilities, shared with the Engineering team as it relates to PyPI

Product Work

  • Help decide what PyPI offers to free users and organizations
  • Research what commercial offerings provide and where PyPI fits
  • Talk to enterprise users and translate their needs into features worth building
  • Balance revenue goals with PyPI’s mission as free infrastructure

Standards & Ecosystem

  • Work with the packaging ecosystem’s standards process when features need upstream changes
  • Coordinate with Packaging Council and other packaging stakeholders

Qualifications

Solid Python experience, comfort with web frameworks, and enough frontend knowledge to ship user-facing features end-to-end. Familiarity with Python packaging and infrastructure concerns like object storage and CDN architecture. Product instincts help since you’ll talk to enterprise users and translate their problems into features worth building. Experience working with open source communities is a plus.

Required: Proficiency with Python web frameworks, base understanding of HTML/CSS/JavaScript, software testing.

Desired: Proficiency with PostgreSQL, proficiency in HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and the Pyramid web framework, Python 3.14+, Pytest, object storage

Details

  • Location: Global remote, US-based candidates strongly preferred; regular collaboration with US timezones required. Exceptional international candidates may be considered under a contractor agreement.
  • Compensation: $75-$180K for US employees (based on experience), or a comparable contractor rate for international candidates. US employees are eligible for healthcare and other benefits; contractor engagements do not include benefits.
  • Type: Fixed-term (Full-time, 1 year), with possibility of renewal

The Python Software Foundation is a US 501Š(3) non-profit corporation that holds the intellectual property rights behind the Python programming language. We also run the PyCon US conference annually, support other Python conferences/workshops around the world, and fund Python-related development with our grants program. To see more info about the PSF, check out our Annual Impact Report and public records.

We believe that the future of open source must include everyone. We welcome all job-seekers regardless of race, color, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, physical appearance, body size, socio-economic, veteran or disability status. Python is a global community and the PSF aims to support a safe environment for all. More information can be found on our Code of Conduct page.

Forward Deployed Engineer

Join a product-oriented technology team that builds software to improve how the company operates. Our small, senior, AI-native team spans data, property technology, and products across the business.

If you see how something should work and want to build it, you’re in the right place.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Own a product end to end: discovery, design, build, deploy, and the measurement that proves it worked
  • Embed with the subject-matter expert who lives the problem and build alongside them, not from a requirements document
  • Build across the stack: APIs, interfaces, and integrations against our property management and financial systems
  • Choose the right instrument: a model, a deterministic pipeline, a vendor product, or a process change

  • Drive AI codegen through the build, and help set the standard for how the team uses it

Education & Experience

  • 5+ years of experience building and shipping software that is used in production
  • Strong proficiency in Python or TypeScript, with experience working with APIs, SQL, and production deployments
  • Deep familiarity with AI-assisted development and coding agents, with the judgment to use them effectively and know when not to
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs clearly to non-technical partners
  • A background in computer science, software engineering, a coding bootcamp, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Comfortable working from loosely defined problems, taking ownership from idea through execution, and measuring success by outcomes
  • Prior work in property management, real estate, or another operations-heavy industry
  • Familiarity with Domo or other BI platforms
  • Exposure to property management systems (Yardi, RealPage, Entrata)
  • Experience building internal tools or automation for a non-technical business
  • A side project, a small business, or a job you automated yourself

This job description should not be considered all-inclusive. It is merely a guide of expected duties. The employee understands that the job description is neither complete nor permanent and may be modified at any time. At the request of their supervisor, an employee may be asked to perform additional duties or take on additional responsibilities without notice. This is a safety-sensitive position and may be subject to additional compliance requirements.

Engineer Software Engineer - Platform Metal | Ireland | Remote at Grafana Labs

Builds and provisions infrastructure including storage, networking, and Kubernetes clusters to support Grafana Cloud's observability platform at scale.

Mid Remote Posted 1 day ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Grafana Labs, the company behind the open observability cloud, is founded on the principles of open source, open standards, open ecosystems, and open culture. Grafana Cloud, our fully managed observability platform, is flexible and built for scale. With Grafana Cloud’s actually useful AI, organizations can see, understand, and act on all their disparate data to move at the speed of their ambitions. Today, more than 35 million users and 7,000+ customers – including Anthropic, Bloomberg, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Salesforce – trust Grafana Labs to ensure reliability of their applications and systems, resolve incidents quickly, and optimize their telemetry to reduce noise and cost. We are a 100% remote company with 1,600+ team members across 40+ countries, and we’re backed by leading investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital, GIC, Coatue, J.P. Morgan, CapitalG, and Lead Edge Capital. Learn more at grafana.com and follow us on LinkedIn and X.

We’re scaling fast and staying true to what makes us different: an open-source legacy, a global collaborative culture, and a passion for meaningful work. Our team thrives in an innovation-driven environment where transparency, autonomy, and trust fuel everything we do.

You may not meet every requirement, and that’s okay. If this role excites you, we’d love you to raise your hand for what could be a truly career-defining opportunity.

This is a remote position. We are looking for candidates in the UK, Spain and Ireland only.

The Opportunity:

About our Platform: Grafana Cloud moves millions of metrics, log lines, and traces per second from our customers’ environments into a highly available, low-latency stack that processes and stores this data, and serves them to dashboards and alerting tools. We aim to grow this to hundreds of millions per second, and it’s critical that as we grow, we improve our performance, increase our reliability, and, of course, do it efficiently and effectively.

The Internal Engineering Platform (IEP) delivered by the Foundations group provides application engineers with the tools, systems and Kubernetes clusters they need to build, deploy and run their workloads.

We are hiring an engineer as part of the creation of a new Foundation’s “Metal” squad. This squad will be responsible for building and provisioning resources including storage, networking and Kubernetes clusters in new environments, starting with our own physical hardware. They will provide a Kubernetes control plane and underlying resources, outside public Cloud, to the rest of Engineering.

What Makes You a Great Fit: You enjoy working with engineers, as well as with the management structures that are there to support you and enable you and your team to do your very best.

You are comfortable working in a remote-first company; communication is key. For us, working together means being collaborative, friendly, kind, and respectful. We operate by consensus, you can contribute to a discussion but then commit to the team decision.

As such, being such a highly distributed company, means we would love someone who is keen on working with distributed systems, too.

You are eager to learn and grow. There is a lot of room for growth and development, and the team has quite a lot of knowledge to share for those who are wanting to learn.

You approach development holistically. The team owns the full life cycle of our code; from writing design docs, to looking at developer feedback, and integration testing. We appreciate engineers who enjoy looking at the big picture, and also notice the details of the brush strokes. The Platform team mainly works with Go, Python, and Shell.

You have experience with operating your code. Since a lot of operators and developers use our software, having some grounding in both of these spaces really helps us with building better platforms for our users.

Datacenter experience.

Participation in an on-call rotation.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Management of our physical “Metal” environment from bare metal to kubernetes.
  • Management of cluster networking components: load balancing, NAT, DNS, CNIs, cross-cluster communication, Routing protocols, Architecture.
  • Management of scheduling and autoscaling.
  • Maintaining Crossplane compositions and Terraform modules for CSP resources common to our users. As well the management of versioning and compatibility for Crossplane and Terraform core as well as providers.
  • Work with our users (Grafana Cloud application teams) to help understand their needs and ensure we’re investing in the right capabilities.

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience with Cluster-API, Tinkerbell, Talos and/or Ceph

  • You’ve worked in or on open source, or other community-based projects previously. At Grafana Labs, “OSS is in our DNA”.

  • Experience with a few CSPs. We run Grafana Cloud on AWS, GCP, and Azure using each’s managed Kubernetes service - EKS, GKE, AKS.

  • Experience operating and managing workloads on Kubernetes. We use Tanka for configuration management with Jsonnet.

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes scheduling and projects like Karpenter.

  • Terraform and/or Crossplane experience. We have mixed usage - each has its strengths.

  • Enjoys programming in Go! We love building our own tools, utilities, exporters, etc. that suit our needs and otherwise don’t exist (and open sourcing them).

  • Maybe there’s something missing in this job description that you think you might bring to our table? Feel free to let us know!

In Ireland, the compensation range for this role is €81,600 - €97,920. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed throughout the interview process. All of our roles include Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), giving every team member ownership in Grafana Labs’ success. We believe in shared outcomes—RSUs help us stay aligned and invested as we scale globally.

*Compensation ranges are country specific. If you are applying for this role from a different location than listed above, your recruiter will discuss your specific market’s defined pay range & benefits at the beginning of the process.

Why You’ll Thrive at Grafana Labs:

In UK, the compensation range for this role is £72,177 - £86,612.
